Building a Comfortable Outhouse

Building a Comfortable Outhouse

(SurvivalDaily.com) – Outhouses are often looked at as nasty wooden shacks that smell to high heaven, but this is a major misconception. They can actually be quite nice; some users might say they’re even comfortable.

Building an outhouse is simple. Dig a 3-by-5-foot hole and build a shack over it. You’ll also need to build a fully enclosed bench that’s about 4 square feet in size. Your bench is going to need a hole in it that’s about 10-12 inches in diameter. The outhouse should be at least 50 feet from your home and even farther away from your water source.

Now, making an outhouse comfortable may seem like some extraordinary task, but it’s actually quite simple. It’s the same as making any other bathroom comfortable: Hang some pictures, have a nice view and add some other themed decorations. You may also want to install a soft toilet seat, have some air freshener available and include a heat source for the winter.

Everyone is different and has varying views on what makes them comfortable, so in the end it’s all up to you. If you’re looking to be even more off-grid, you can check out the compost toilet, which has the ability to be portable.
