(SurvivalDaily.com) – Fearing the inevitability of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack, many preppers are doing what they can to prepare themselves for one ahead of time. An EMP would wipe out all electronics that are not protected against that sort of attack. That means cell phones, cars, computers, TVs, and many other products will no longer work. You can, however, build a box or cage to protect your electronics. It’s called a Faraday Cage or an EMP box.
The first step to building your Faraday Cage is determining what items you need to protect. Next, you will need to find a container large enough to hold those items. Once you’ve done all that, you’re ready to start building your EMP-proof box.
What Do You Need?
For starters, you’ll need a container that can be sealed tightly. Common materials for EMT boxes include galvanized trash cans, metal ammo boxes, and even tightly sealed metal filing cabinets. You can also decide to “go big or go home” and choose to build a custom box out of sheet metal. Set some time aside if you go that route because it requires a lot of work.
Next, you’ll need something to keep the electronics from making contact with the container’s metal sides. Typically, people use cardboard, styrofoam, insulation, or carpet scraps. It doesn’t matter what you choose as long as it doesn’t conduct electricity.
Also, don’t forget the duct tape! It can be used to ensure a good seal on your box.
Putting it to the Test
There are a few ways you can test your Faraday cage, you can:
- Put your cell phone inside and try to call it.
- Place an AM/FM radio inside and turn it on.
- Place a walkie-talkie or CB radio inside and attempt to contact it.
If any of these objects work as they should, you need to go back and determine why the box isn’t working correctly. Typically, this happens because it isn’t adequately sealed. That’s where the duct tape comes in! Tape up all openings and seams to ensure your box has a good seal. After all, that seal is what’s going to protect your equipment.
Some people may be able to get away with wrapping their phone with aluminum foil, while others may not. And while we’re on the subject of foil, you can also cover your entire cage with it to enhance its level of protection for your electronics.
